5 Red Cocktails to Try This National Day

Our nation’s Independence Day is approaching! While we would all like to be out celebrating and enjoying the annual firework show from the floating platform, we will not be able to do so this year due to the pandemic. But nobody said you can’t still have a ball of a time watching the parade from the comfort of your own home. Why not shake up some red-white cocktails while you celebrate Singapore’s birthday?

Read on for our suggested list of colourful drinks for the upcoming National Day!

1. Watermelon Margarita

Nothing like an ice-cold glass of frozen margarita on a hot day in sunny Singapore. Give this refreshing cocktail a try and you will definitely find yourself making it on the regular.

You will need:

  • 2 cups watermelon
  • ¾ cups tequila
  • ¼ cups Triple sec
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tbsp lime juice

Directions:

Add watermelon, sugar, lime juice and tequila into the blender to blend it all together. Then add ice and blend until your preferred consistency. Serve in a margarita glass and garnish with a watermelon slice.

2. Patriot Punch

How aptly named is this red drink for National Day? You already know you have to make this, but go slow as it packs a punch, with a total of three different liquors in a single serving.

You will need:

  • 2 parts Irish whiskey
  • 1 part brandy
  • 1 part cranberry juice
  • 2 parts champagne

Directions:

Add Irish whiskey, ice, cranberry juice, champagne and brandy and stir together in a chilled glass. Garnish with a lemon wheel.

3. Crantini

Love cranberry vodka? You will definitely want to try making this version of martini with vodka at home.

You will need:

  • 2 parts vodka
  • 2 parts cranberry juice

Directions:

This cocktail is a breeze to make. Simply fill up the shaker with ice, pour the cranberry juice and vodka in and shake well. Strain liquids into a martini glass and garnish with cranberries.

4. Citrus Berry Spritz

You will need:

  • 260ml vermouth
  • 60ml club soda
  • 4 raspberries
  • 1 fresh mint leave for garnish

Directions:

Place the ice at the bottom of the cocktail glass, combine the vermouth and club soda in another cocktail glass and stir together before pouring it over the ice. Arrange the raspberries on the top, allowing it to “float” above the ice. Red and white, do you see it?

5. Lava Flow Mocktail

If you have got little ones at home, make sure they don’t feel left out watching the parade with adults who are sipping on pretty red drinks by fixing up a red mocktail for them. This one’s a fun one that they will definitely love!

You will need (this recipe serves three):

  • 1 cup of frozen raspberries
  • 4-6 fresh raspberries
  • 60ml pure maple syrup
  • 250ml whole milk
  • 250ml vanilla ice cream or frozen yoghurt
  • 150ml whipped cream

Directions:

Add the frozen raspberries and maple syrup to the blender and blend on high until pureed. Transfer the puree to a small jug and set it aside. Next, add the ice cream, milk and 1 tablespoon of maple syrup to blend until smooth. Get the raspberry puree that was set aside before and carefully spoon it into a glass then gently pour the milk topping over the puree layer – this way, you will have two distinct red and white layers. Finally, top it off with a squirt of whipped cream and two raspberries for garnish.

3 Cocktails You Can Make With Everyday Drinks at Home

Picture this – you just got off from a hectic day of working from home. You are looking forward to a nice dinner and spending several hours lounging on your couch, spending quality time with your loved ones. But it feels like you might be lacking something… That’s right, cocktails! You scramble to the kitchen, but all you find is a bunch of juices, nothing fancy and your good ol’ stash of alcohol.

While it might look like a fancy drinks session to unwind after dinner is about to bite the dust, fret not as JARBARLAR has a ton of ideas for you! If you are looking for a bit of an escape from the daily grind, then this list of easy cocktails is for you. We have compiled some of the best cocktails recipes that you can easily whip up at home to help take your mind off things and make it feel like your day off has arrived early.

1. Screwdriver

3 Cocktails You Can Make With Everyday Drinks at Home

Ever wondered how the Screwdriver cocktail got its name? Decades ago, American workers working in the Persian Gulf used to sneak a little vodka in the orange juice to drink on the job. Since they did not have a spoon readily available, they stirred the alcohol in with a screwdriver. Containing only orange juice and vodka, it is a fairly simple recipe that packs a punch.

You will need:

60ml Vodka

150ml Orange juice (freshly squeezed, if possible)

Directions:

Pour the vodka and orange juice in a Collins glass with ice and stir well. Yes, you read that right – that is all there is to a glass of Screwdriver!

2. Mimosa

3 Cocktails You Can Make With Everyday Drinks at Home

Making a Mimosa couldn’t be any simpler than making a Screwdriver, since both cocktails only contain two basic ingredients. For Mimosa, you will have to dig around for that bottle of champagne or sparkling wine that you have stashed away for a special occasion. Heck, it’s Wednesday night and you have gotten through half the working week – we can celebrate that!

You will need:

120ml orange juice

120ml champagne/sparkling wine

Directions:

Since it is cocktail hour at home, break out your flute glasses or wine glasses and chill them before making your cocktail. Next, simply combine the liquids for a tasty post-dinner tipple! If you are feeling fancy, you can also add a little orange liqueur for a stronger citrus flavour.

3. Sombrero

Swap out your post-dinner bubble tea routine with a sweet and smooth cocktail like the Sombrero. You have been warned – you’ll definitely want seconds after your first taste. With it being such a short recipe, you can easily make multiple glasses at a go.

You will need:

60ml Kahlua

60 to 90ml milk

Directions:

Fill an old fashioned glass with ice and pour the coffee liqueur first. Top off the glass with milk then serve and enjoy. If you prefer a thicker drink, you can easily switch out the milk with cream or a mix of both. Vanilla-flavoured milk can be a great option if you are dying to satisfy your sweet tooth after a heavy dinner.

4 Easy Cocktails for a Spooky Halloween

Halloween, an annual time for all things scary and creepy. If suffering through  COVID-19 social distancing measures the past year and a half wasn’t scary enough for you, here are four easy cocktails that’ll help you celebrate and potentially forget the sum of all your fears.

1. Black Magic Margaritas

Suffice to say, the margarita is a classic drink for any occasion. This dark and sweet twist on the classic margarita is not only delicious, but is sure to leave a colourful impression on your palette (literally!)

You will need:
60ml silver/clear tequila
30ml Triple Sec
60ml Lime juice
Red, blue, and green food colouring
2g black sanding sugar/sprinkles
Lime slice(s), for garnishing

Serves 1 glass.

Directions:

Start by rimming a glass with a slice of lime and dip it in the sugar/sprinkles. Shake or stir the tequila, triple sec, and lime juice in a glass till well combined. Add the food colouring till the desired black tone is achieved. Pour over a glass of ice and garnish with a slice of lime.

2. Sweet Poison

Unlike the Margarita, this drink is no twist on a classic. This gorgeous cocktail, with its blue and teal overtones, looks right at home next to a jar of potion ingredients. As its name would suggest, don’t let the Sweet Poison’s  saccharine and tangy taste fool you. One too many of these and you might start seeing things that aren’t really there!

You will need:
30ml light/clear rum
60ml coconut rum
30ml Blue Curacao
Pineapple juice
Pineapple wedge(s), for garnishing

Serves 1 glass.

Directions:

Pour the clear rum, coconut rum, and Blue Curacao into a cocktail shaker or tall glass. Combine the ingredients till well incorporated. Fill a cocktail glass with ice and pour the mixture over, topping up the rest with chilled pineapple juice. Finish by garnishing with a pineapple wedge.

3. Bloody Mary

A drink named after sinister folklore, this tart crimson cocktail does not, in fact, contain any blood. Rumour has it that one could summon the titular apparition by standing in front of a dimly lit mirror and chanting “Bloody Mary” thirteen times. She allegedly appears as a mangled corpse or witch, soaked in ichor. While not as scary, this cocktail is definitely delicious and favourite amongst those who fancy a more savory drink.

You will need:
45ml vodka
150ml tomato juice
Tabasco sauce
Worcestershire sauce
Sea salt
Lemon juice (optional)
1 stalk of celery, for garnishing

Serves 1 glass

Directions:

Fill a tall glass with ice. Mix the vodka, tomato juice, Tabasco and Worcestershire sauce in a separate glass or cocktail shaker. If you prefer a little more acidity, add the juice of half a lemon to this mixture. Stir well till well combined and strain into the glass of ice. Adjust for flavour with salt as preferred and garnish with a stalk of celery.

4. Graveyard

A drink notorious for its incredible strength and spirit-forwardedness, the Graveyard is a veritable glass of death. Comprising 7 different spirits and 2 beers, this jet-black cocktail has one goal – to put you six feet under.

You will need:
15ml vodka
15ml gin
15ml tequila
15ml bourbon whisky
15ml Scotch whisky
15ml triple sec
15ml Barcardi 151
Beer (lager)
Stout

Serves 1 glass

Directions:

Fill a glass half full with ice and add all the spirits. Stir and mix well to incorporate, and top up the remaining with equal parts beer and stout till the glass is full.

4 Merry Cocktails to Serve Up This Christmas

Christmas cocktails with festive decorations

As the big ol’ fir starts going up in our living rooms and decorations adorn the green centrepiece, we remind ourselves that Christmas is a time for thanksgiving and love. To show our loved ones how much we value them and to spend quality time amongst friends. A large part of these celebrations is the wholesome dinners and Christmas parties spent bonding over a delightful meal and delicious drinks.

If you’re looking to spice up your meals with some signature Yuletide cocktails, why not consider these easy yet tasteful recipes to add a touch of class to your holiday inebriation?

1. Cranberry Mimosas

Mimosas are the perfect drink for any jovial occasion – but how about taking it to the next level with the tart and citrusy notes of cranberries this holiday season?

You will need:

1 bottle of Champagne
12 fresh cranberries
1 cup of sweetened cranberry juice
2 tablespoons of sugar
1 lime, halved
4 fresh sprigs of rosemary

Serves 4.

Directions:

Rim the glasses (preferably champagne flutes for that extra holiday vibe) with lime and dip in sugar. Pour a quarter cup of cranberry juice into each glass and top with champagne. Using a toothpick, poke a hole through the cranberries before threading the rosemary skewers through and garnishing on top of the glass. Voila! A simple Christmas glass of bubbly elevated to the next level.

2. Peppermintinis

A spin on a classic, the Martini, these Peppermintinis are deceptively potent and an absolute treat. Nothing says Christmas like these delightful candy cane inspired cocktails.

You will need:

160 ml of Grey Goose or Belvedere
80ml of peppermint schnapps
240ml of white chocolate liqueur
1 cup of semisweet chocolate chips, melted
1/2 cup of crushed cane canes
3 tablespoons of heavy cream
4 small candy canes
Ice, as necessary.

Serves 4.

Directions:

Lay out the melted chocolate chips and crushed candy canes on two separate plates. Rim four martini glasses first in the chocolate, then the candy canes. Pour the remaining chocolate into the bottom of each glass and swirl to coat evenly. Place glasses in the freezer while preparing the rest. Combine the white chocolate liqueur, vodka, peppermint schnapps, and heavy cream in a tall cocktail shaker. Fill to the top with ice and shake until cold. Divide the contents into the four glasses and garnish with a candy cane each, before serving.

3. Blessmosas

If champagne isn’t really your speed, a bottle of prosecco is also brilliant for spreading Christmas cheer with these Blessmosas. Arguably less stiff and perfect for a Christmas brunch over ham, don’t miss out on this simple cocktail!

You will need:

1800 ml of Somersby Apple Cider
900 ml of cranberry juice
1 bottle of Prosecco
1 apple, half diced into cubes and the other half sliced into half-moons for garnish
1 package of whole cranberries
2 tablespoons of sugar
1 teaspoon of cinnamon

Serves 4.

Directions:

Combine the sugar and cinnamon on a plate, before rimming each glass in the mixture. Proceed by filling each glass (ideally a champagne flute since we’re enjoying some bubbly) to the one-quarter mark with cranberry juice. Fill to the halfway mark with apple cider and top with the prosecco as well as cranberries and diced apples. Garnish each glass with an apple slice.

4. Whisky Ginger

A drink that’s sure to wow your guests, this new take on an old school classic cocktail might require a bit more prep work but trust us when we say it’s worth it.

You will need:

120g of ginger
120g of sugar
Water, as per necessary
240 ml of whisky, preferably something with a little peat, like Laphroaig or Lagavulin 16
600 ml of ginger ale
Lime wheels, to garnish

Serves 4.

Directions:

Peel and slice the ginger into 3-centimetre coins. In a medium saucepan, add enough water to cover the ginger to a boil and add ginger coins before reducing heat to a medium-low simmer. Once the ginger is tender, strain it out and reserve a tablespoon of boiling liquid. Dry the saucepan before adding cooked ginger, sugar, and reserved cooking water on medium-low heat. Stir frequently to avoid burning the sugar, eventually candying the ginger coins. Move these onto a separate plate and allow them to cool, crystalising the sugars. Meanwhile fill four glasses with equal measures of whisky, before topping with ginger ale. Thread the candied ginger coins onto a toothpick and garnish the rim of glasses with lime wheels. Stick a candied ginger toothpick into the lime and serve.
