Best Before vs. Use By/Expiry Dates: Unveiling the Mystery

Jarbarlar Alcohol Delivery Expiry

When it comes to beer, you may have noticed the presence of “Best Before” dates on the packaging. But what exactly do these dates signify, and how should they influence your beer-drinking experience? In this blog post, we’ll delve into the difference between “Best Before” and expiry dates for beer, helping you understand how these dates impact the quality and enjoyment of your favorite brews. Let’s raise our glasses and embark on a journey to uncover the truth about beer dating!

The Meaning of “Best Before” Dates

When a beer bottle or can is marked with a “Best Before” date, it indicates the recommended time frame during which the beer is at its optimal quality and flavor. It signifies the period when the brewer believes the beer is at its freshest, ensuring a delightful drinking experience. Consuming the beer before this date allows you to savor its intended taste profile.

If you come across a date marked with only the year and month

it can be the most perplexing among different date markings. In such cases, the consumption guidelines are as follows: for a use by/expiry date, the product must be consumed by the last day of that month, while for a best before date, it is recommended to enjoy the product by the last day of that month. For example, ‘Expiry: 2023 July’ or ‘2022.7’ signifies that you should consume it by July 31, 2023.

Quality vs. Safety

It’s important to differentiate between “Best Before” dates and expiry dates in terms of their significance. While an expiry date denotes the point after which a product is no longer safe for consumption, a “Best Before” date solely reflects the potential decline in quality. For beer, this means that while the beer may still be safe to consume after the “Best Before” date, it may experience slight changes in flavor and overall quality.

Understanding Quality Changes

As the “Best Before” date approaches, certain changes may occur in the beer’s taste, aroma, or carbonation levels. These changes can result from factors such as oxygen exposure, temperature fluctuations, or the natural aging process. While the beer might not be at its absolute peak freshness, it can still offer an enjoyable drinking experience even after the “Best Before” date has passed.

Factors Affecting Beer Quality

To better understand how a beer’s quality may be affected, consider the following factors:

Storage conditions

Exposure to light, heat, and varying temperatures can accelerate the aging process and impact flavor stability.

Beer style

Different beer styles have varying shelf lives, with some styles maintaining their quality for longer periods than others.

Packaging integrity

Well-sealed bottles or cans protect the beer from oxygen and light, helping preserve its quality.

Conclusion

When it comes to beer, the “Best Before” date serves as a guideline for optimal quality and flavor. While the beer may experience minor changes in taste and quality after this date, it doesn’t necessarily render it undrinkable. Trust your senses when evaluating the freshness of a beer, and use the “Best Before” date as a reference point for enjoying it at its best. Remember, beer enjoyment is subjective, and exploring different flavors and styles can be part of the adventure. So grab a cold one, appreciate the craftsmanship, and savor the delightful world of beer, even beyond the “Best Before” date!

All You Need to Know About Macallan Scotch Whiskey

Ask any whisky aficionado to name three brands of their favourite single malt, and inevitably the name Macallan will surface in conversation. Heck, ask anyone who’s ever walked into a bar in Singapore to name a brand of Scotch whisky and we bet you the results would probably be the same. Such brand equity doesn’t come easily and rest assured that every little bit of it is hard-earned. Placing utmost emphasis on the selection of their oak-casks and the aging process, Macallan has successfully managed to ensure the quality of their spirits for the better half of the last two centuries.

You read that right, Maccallan has been around since 1824. With that amount of legacy and heritage, it’s clearly no surprise to hear that the most expensive bottle of whisky ever auctioned was a Macallan. The Macallan 1926 Fine and Rare 60 Year Old, distilled close to a century ago at the peak of American Prohibition, fetched a whopping 2.6 million SGD price tag at hammer during its Sotheby’s auction. One can only wonder in amazement knowing that this particular bottle of whisky has lived through a World War and is older than the majority of you reading this.

The Macallan Story

The Macallan Distillery had humble beginnings, and was founded in 1824 when then-owner Alexander Reid obtained the respective licenses after the 1823 Excise Act was passed. 45 years later, Reid sold the plant to James Stuart who began rebuilding the estate and expanding it. Macallan finally hit it big in 1892 when Roderick Kemp, a Victorian distilling magnate bought ownership of the label and passed it down from generation to generation. It wasn’t until 1996 that Highland Distillers, now known as Edrington, took over Macallan and exponentially grew the distillery till critical mass.

Originally starting out in a single wooden shed with two stills, Macallan now boasts two major stillhouses and a subterranean distillery that was launched in 2018. Their portfolio of products has also grown massively, with the brand’s flagship bottles being the 12 year and 18 year age statement single malt whiskies. Outside of that, Macallan has also experimented with American oak ex-sherry and ex-bourbon casks in their finishing process – a step away from the traditional flavors of Macallan. Boasting a lighter, and sweeter flavor profile than the usual Speyside whiskies, these innovations have helped draw in a younger target audience and reinvigorated appreciation for the Macallan brand.

In particular, the Macallan 12 year old Sherry Oak-Highland has drawn much adoration for its perfect balance of new versus old. New and returning fans of the Scottish whisky brand have praised its rich woody nose and dried fruity finish, with a full body that is undeniably traditional Macallan.

Enjoying a Glass of Macallan Whiskey

If you have a bottle of Macallan handy right now, you’re in luck. Whether it’s on the rocks or with a little bit of soda water, the ideal way to enjoy most spirits is however you prefer it best.

But Macallan isn’t like most spirits. Traditional wisdom dictates that the best way to enjoy a bottle of Macallan is neat, in a concave glass that fully allows you to appreciate the nose of the spirit.

Adding a dash of water to open up its flavor profile is also recommended, although too much water is discouraged due to diluting the whisky’s flavour. This logic also applies to why whisky experts dissuade adding any ice into your drink.

To avoid offending whisky purists, any mixers with your scotch, beyond plain water, would be considered sacrilegious. So if you’re in the presence of one, best put that bottle of Coke back in the fridge.

Know The Difference – Tequila VS Mezcal

Tequila. Just the word alone might dredge up repressed memories of shot glasses and unfortunate decisions. Yes, we’ve all been there – a night out in town and things get a little wild. Someone screams “let’s do shots!” and out comes a dozen reasons why you’re gonna be hungover tomorrow, complete with salt and lime.

The truth is, there is more to the noble spirits of South America than just being relegated to a party drink. Tequila and Mezcal are heavily rooted in Mexican culture, and these drinks have been rising in popularity across the world in recent years. Before we dive deeper, let’s square off what separates the two – mezcal refers to a distilled spirit made from any variety of the agave plant. Tequila, however, is made from a specific species of agave known as the blue agave plant. In a sense, all tequilas are mezcals but not all mezcals can be called tequila.

One critical reason why both these drinks have become so desired in the past decade is due to the significant increase in exports. Now more than ever, a greater number of consumers are getting their hands on quality mezcals and tequilas, and they honestly can’t get enough.

The Origins

Although the blanket term for mezcal is relatively large, there are still some very strict requirements before the drink can be regarded as “true mezcal”.

Much like how true champagne can only be made in the Champagne region of France, or true prosciutto di Parma (parma ham) must be produced in the Province of Parma in Italy – true mezcal has to be distilled in one of the eight states of Mexico.

As we also alluded to earlier, the core requirement of tequila is that it is produced from the blue agave plant. How it differs is that tequila has no regional condition and distilleries can even be located outside of Mexico.

Another big difference between tequila and mezcal is also the way each is prepared prior to the fermentation and distillation process. In the case of tequila, the bulb of the blue agave is baked and juiced before being fermented with yeast in barrels. For mezcal, the raw agave is roasted in a pit filled with hot coals for two or three days, before being juiced and fermented. This process is key in imbuing mezcal with its signature smoky palette.

Prominence In Cocktail Bars

Often utilised because of its unique smokiness, mezcal has been taking centre stage as a new addition to classic cocktails in many bars and restaurants. These sticklers for quality and consistency also adore mezcal due to its small-batch organic production process. Although arduous and small-yielding, the process pays off massively with an unmatched product.

This adoption can be seen via statistics as well. In an article this year, BusinessWire reported mezcal exports rising by approximately 30% year on year, with the market expected to continue growing. With close to three-quarters of exports going to the United States, western consumers have clearly demonstrated a thirst for the South American libation.

Enjoying Tequila & Mezcal

Whether it’s in a cocktail or poured neat in glass, there are plenty of ways to enjoy both spirits. Fans of traditional peaty whiskies will take to mezcal extremely quickly, with the smoky flavours adding a familiar touch to cocktails they might already enjoy such as an Old Fashioned.

That’s not to say that tequila and mezcal don’t pair well. The nature of their shared agave origins means that they complement each other fabulously too, in cocktails such as the infamous Margarita.

Get Your Bottle of Mexican Spirit at JARBARLAR

Now that we’re all caught up on mezcal and tequila, what better way to experience the alcohols of Mexico than imbibing it first-hand. At JARBARLAR, we offer a wide range of mezcal and tequila – suited for new entrants and connoisseurs alike.

Know Your Beers | Stout and Lager

Stout and Lager

You know you like your coffee with milk – a latte, you know you like your steak medium-rare, but do you know how you like your beers? The best way to find out your preferences is to give everything a shot – literally. However, if you are heading to a specialty craft beer joint this weekend with your posse and don’t want to risk burning a hole in your wallet trying to figure out which beer you fancy, narrow down your options by identifying the type of beer that you usually drink. Bars usually categorise beers into different categories such as lager, stout and pale ale, which makes things easier for you.

For most Singaporeans, it almost always boils down to stout or lager. Why so?

The Difference

Technically speaking, all beers are either lagers or ales so it really is just lager VS ale instead of lager VS stout. The categorisation is mainly determined by the type of yeast used during the fermentation process during beer-making. Lagers are made with yeast that ferments at the bottom of the beer mixture while ales are made with yeast that does the opposite – ferment at the top. Stout happens to fall into the category of ales, as it is a top-fermented beer.

Lagers are golden-coloured beers that are usually lighter in flavour, more refreshing and lower in alcohol content. It is also most popular in countries like the Czech Republic and Germany. Stouts on the other hand, are dark beers (usually looks dark brown to black) that come with a strong roasted flavour and are commonly attributed as “strong” since it has a higher alcohol level than lagers in general.

Lagers

Being one of the world’s most popular choice of beer style, lagers are easy on the alcohol level and can satisfy alcohol-thirsty amateurs to casual Friday night drinkers looking to unwind and grab a cold one after work during dinner. Lagers are known for their “crisp” profile and some popular ones in Singapore available on JARBARLAR include Peroni, Heineken and Asahi Super Dry.

Lagers are the stuff of summertime beer commercials, the equivalent of a can of Coca Cola in the world of soft drinks. As it is usually heavily carbonated, the best way to enjoy a pint or a can of the former would be to have it served chilled, making it perfect for Singapore’s warm climate. The best part of it all – lagers tend to have fewer calories than other alcoholic beverages, making it the choice for calorie-conscious individuals who are looking for a “healthier” alternative to consume alcohol. If you work out regularly and don’t wish to waste too many calories on beer, lagers can be your go-to.

Stouts

Made with roasted barley, stouts are commonly known to be strong, roasty and dark. If you like heavy profiles and a low level of carbonation in your beers, stouts will definitely be your choice of poison. The most celebrated stout producer in the world is probably Guinness, the Irish icon for stout and the preferred beer for Irishmen on St Patrick’s Day.

Known affectionately as Ang Ji Kao (red-tongued dog) by locals, stouts have won the hearts of young and old Singaporeans who regularly enjoy a pint or two at neighbourhood coffeeshops or bars they frequent. Some might even order in bulk for festivities such as Chinese New Year. However, many do not know that the dark beer got its colloquial name as Guinness’ Asia distributor used to feature its own logo of a wolfhound beside the former’s brand name decades ago and it stuck.

Get Your Favourite Stout and Lager From JARBARLAR

Can’t decide between stouts and lagers? Fret not as you can get both types of beers and tons more at JARBARLAR’s online liquor shop. Order online today and get your alcohol fix at cheap prices and islandwide delivery within Singapore to your doorstep.

Whiskey 101 | What Should a Beginner Drink?

You might not know much about whiskeys, but we can all agree that the one thing the whiskey world promises is exclusivity and bountiful mysteries. As an amateur you might be thinking – which whiskey should I start with? How does good whiskey taste? How to drink whiskey? Should I drink it neat (unchilled) or on the rocks? Read on for a list of exquisite starter whiskeys and answers to your burning questions about all things whiskey.

First things first, some technical terms to note before we dive into our whiskey recommendations:

  • Tasting notes – Evaluation of the whiskey which includes a sensory examination (taste, smell and colour)
  • Finish – how long you can taste the whiskey and its texture
  • Body – the way a whiskey feels in your mouth (a whiskey that floods your mouth with flavour immediately would be described as “having a lot of body”)

1. Blended Malt – Jameson Irish Whiskey

Jameson Irish Whiskey

Originating from Ireland, the Jameson Irish Whiskey’s flavour stems from a unique mixture of a single pot still whiskey from malted and unmalted, or green, barley, and a grain whiskey. With a triple distillation process, a minimum of four years of ageing in an oak cask, naturally smooth and mellow finish and absence of smoky flavours make this whiskey perfect for a rookie dipping his or her toes into whiskey tasting.

If you are not used to tasting whiskey neat and are wondering what to mix with whiskey, simply mix one part Jameson with two parts Ginger Ale for a refreshing cocktail or add it to coffee for a cuppa authentic Irish Coffee.

Bourbon – Bulleit Bourbon

Bulleit Bourbon

Bourbon is a great option for budding whiskey enthusiasts as it encompasses a sweeter tasting profile and flavours that are more prominent on the palate.

The Bulleit Bourbon is inspired by the whiskey pioneered by Augustus Bulleit over 150 years ago. Made with ingredients of the highest quality, the subtlety and complexity of this particular bourbon are derived from its unique blend of rye, corn, barley malt, special strains of yeast and pure Kentucky limestone-filtered water. Its tasting notes feature gentle spiciness and sweet oak aromas along with a smooth mid-palate with tones of maple, oaks and nutmeg. The finish is long, dry and satiny with a light toffee flavour.

Enjoy it neat, or add a splash of water to the whiskey to “open up” its aroma.

Single Malt – Bruichladdich Black Art 6.1

Bruichladdich Black Art 6.1

Claimed to bring you on a spiritual journey, the Bruichladdich Black Art 6.1 comes with a polished walnut tasting note with a richness of the oak and fruit. On your second sip, you can expect to taste dark fruits, date, fig, raisin, chocolate, crystallised ginger and floral red rose. The taste of this whiskey is difficult to grasp as it changes dramatically with every layer and each one adds to the mystery of its creation process. Choose the Bruichladdich Black Art 6.1 for an immeasurable whiskey-tasting journey.

It is recommended to taste your whisky neat first, and then add a little spring water with your second sip. Combine the whisky and water by gently shaking the glass.

Single Malt Scotch  – Glenfiddich 18 Years

Glenfiddich 18 Years

The Glenfiddich 18 is a truly exceptional single malt scotch whiskey, it is the result of 18 years of care and attention, along with impeccable whiskey-making craftsmanship and knowledge passed down through the generations of descendants. In fact, it is one of the last family distilleries still running since 1886 in Scotland.

This single malt scotch is matured with Spanish Oloroso wood and American oak, which brings fruity and robust oak expression. Additionally, every batch is individually numbered and carefully looked after, ensuring a warming and distinguished finish.

You can enjoy this glass of whiskey the same way you would a single malt.

How To Best Drink Cognac | Martell Singapore

All cognac is brandy, but very little brandy is cognac. What exactly is cognac? A classic French spirit, cognac is a type of brandy that is primarily made from a blend of grapes. This includes the Ugni blanc, Folle Blanche, and Colombard varieties. Another interesting factor to note is that cognac, like champagne, must be made in the Cognac region of France.

Stretching back to the 1600s, the oldest operational brand for cognac internationally is Martell. 300 years in the making of significant cognac making, Martell is one of the most renowned brands. Top-quality product, visual branding, and achievement are defining characteristics of what makes Martell the best. From the well-known Martell VSOP to cult favourite Cordon Bleu, JARBARLAR houses Martell cognac in Singapore, available for alcohol delivery in Singapore

View our list of cognac brands here

Factors to consider when drinking cognac

First time drinking cognac? Fret not, we’ve distilled the necessary know-how’s you’ll need to properly enjoy this exquisite spirit.

1. Choice of glass

There are three different types of glasses in which cognac is typically served. We have the tulip glass, balloon glass, and the wobble sniffer. With a considerable amount of time going into the distillation of the spirit, it’s only right that you pay attention to the drinking vessel. While the tulip glass is preferred for maximum aroma and impact on your senses, the other two glass types concentrate the spirit and intensify its flavour.

That’s not to say that you can’t use cocktail glasses for cognac, especially if you’re enjoying its versatility in a ol’ cocktail favourite.

2. Drinking cognac the right way

A versatile spirit, cognac can be drunk straight or paired well as a base for cocktails. Whether you’re enjoying it alone or in a bar with friends, we’ve got you covered.

Choosing your cognac

Graded into different qualities in terms of age, pick the cognac you’re most keen on trying. Generally, these are the three different types. We’ll look at the Martell’s brand of cognacs.

  • VSOP: The VSOP stands for Very Special Old Pale. This is a cognac where the youngest has been aged for a minimum of 4 years. We recommend the Martell VSOP Red Barrel for its natural fruit flavours and subtle wood tone.
  • VS: Standing for Very Special, this cognac is the youngest quality and has been aged for a minimum of 2 years in the oak casks.

Celebrating Valentine’s with a twist

Although Valentine’s Day gets its name from a saint, there are several stories of who he was and how the holiday came about. Modern day celebrations signal shows of affection for lovers and friends alike through cards, flowers, and chocolates. From romantic dinners to friendly get-togethers, the number of ways to commemorate this sweet holiday sees no end.

1. Love Potion

champagne cocktail

Put a spin on the traditional champagne with this cocktail. Pink, sparkly, and festive – this concoction is guaranteed to make your partner swoon. Instead of the usual champagne, add one part blackberry syrup to take things up a notch.

You’ll need:

  • ⅓ cup of blackberries
  • ⅓ cup of water
  • ⅓ cup of sugar
  • 1 bottle of champagne
  • 4 sprigs of thyme

Bring the blackberries, water, and sugar to a boil in a small saucepan. Let it simmer for 10 minutes. Strain the blackberries and let the syrup cool. Add 2 tablespoons of syrup to each glass, top with champagne – we have a good range of champagnes – and finish with thyme and some blackberries.

2. Charleston Pink Lady Cocktail

Charleston Pink Lady Cocktail

Everyone loves a good gin-based drink. The Charleston Pink Lady Cocktail is a sweet treat decadent with heavy cream. Demure, indulgent, and rightfully sinful, this cocktail recipe is not without a kick. Use Hendrick’s Gin and Bols Grenadine Syrup for the recipe.

You’ll need:

  • 3 jiggers gin
  • 1 ½ jiggers of heavy cream
  • 1 jigger applejack
  • 1 teaspoon grenadine
  • Ice

Pour all the ingredients and shake vigorously in a shaker. Strain and serve in cocktail glasses.

3. Single Lady Sangria  Single Lady Sangria

Who doesn’t love sangria? If you’re celebrating Valentine’s with your girlfriends, skip ordering the wine and go for the Single Lady Sangria instead. Make a large pitcher and put on a movie for the night!

You’ll need:

  • 1 bottle of rosé
  • 1 ½ cup of seltzer
  • ½ cup of pomegranate juice
  • ¼ cup of raspberry liqueur
  • ½ cup of vodka
  • 1 cup of sliced strawberries
  • 1 cup of raspberries

Combine the rosé, seltzer, pomegranate juice, vodka, and raspberry liqueur in a large pitcher and stir well. Add the fruits and leave to chill for about an hour. Stir before serving and enjoy!

4. Valentine’s Day Mimosa

Valentine’s Day Mimosa

For better reasons than its name, this twist on the classic mimosa is bound to leave your partner and/or friends speechless. Made with champagne, the Valentine’s Day Mimosa is – dare we say – one of our favourites to start the evening off with!

You’ll need:

  • 1 bottle of champagne
  • 2 tablespoons of grenadine
  • Strawberries or raspberries for garnish

Play on the theme of love with heart-shaped strawberries. Use a knife to cut them into shape and pierce them into skewers. Alternatively, you can use raspberries for a punch! Fill champagne flute glasses ⅔ full with champagne and a tablespoon of grenadine at the top. Garnish and enjoy! Buy the Moet Champagne or Dom Perignon from our online store today.
